Acceptance into 15th Surreal Salon at Baton Rouge Gallery

Posted on

Before the studios were bombed, two works escaped with me as I delivered them to Baton Rogue Gallery for their 15th Annual Surreal Salon!

I am over the moon about this. It is a prestigious show that has sky rocketed my fine art career to the next level. There’s so much to it:

The exhibition, held in partnership with the LSU School of Art, shares the work of dozens of artists each year from across the globe, this year featuring 62 artists, representing 21 states, and 9 different countries. All works featured were selected via a blind jurying process by Special Guest Juror Marco Mazzoni. (An amazing artist I admire!) The exhibition is on view at BRG January 3 – 26, 2023.

Being a part of it alone is enough, but the knowledge that people from the top of the pop-surrealism industry like Juxtapose Magazine will see my work in a personal way is exciting. That 5ft x 4ft 2020 piece will command attention, and, who knows, I might even win something:

More than $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded in conjunction with the exhibition and the artist whose work is selected as Best in Show will also be profiled in an online editorial by Juxtapoz Magazine.

The selected works were my enormous 5ft x 4ft oil & acrylic painting entitled “2020” and my tiny oil & acrylic on hexagonal panel entitled “Rooster” completed in 2022.

“2020” was a personal piece about the chaos that ensued when our world took a turn for the worst. The devastating effects on mental health as well as resulting in the largest transfer of wealth, hollowing out the middle class while enriching corporations, ever seen in history. It also speaks strongly to the rise of suicide, crime, and riots due to draconian, anti-scientific lockdown measures. It was painted throughout 2020 and finished in early 2021 and remains a time-capsule of that moment in history.

“Rooster” is a continuation of my Archetypes series within a series called Iterations. This sub-series focuses on my expansion of Carl Jung’s philosophy. The concept of archetypes is a key aspect of Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious, which suggests that there are universal experiences that are inherent to the human experience. The existence of archetypes can be inferred from various cultural phenomena, such as stories, art, myths, religions, and dreams.[7]

I create images of animals and their Sacred Geometry aura disembodied for people to examine how they relate to my new archetypes and these eternal shapes. The prismatic background also alludes to the Holographic Principle.

Beyond any further recognition I may receive as a result of this exhibit, being in the show is enough to make me extremely proud and I will be attending the Soiree in my full Fink Geomancer attire.

It is going to be a blast!

This year is about letting go of the things that do not serve you any longer and making time for one’s needs. We are deep into the Apocalypse.
